Our Rivers

In the heart of the Mattole River headwaters is the Van Arken Watershed. It is made up of over 1,300 acres of natural undeveloped wilderness. The Van Arken is the third largest tributary in the headwaters and an important salmon stronghold for wild runs of native coho, chinook, and steelhead.

Our friends at Sanctuary Forest have worked over the years to purchase land within this watershed area in order to protect it from future development and ensure a safe habitat for our salmonoid friends.

We’re thankful to have participated in this project to protect the Van Arken watershed.
